MEET THE GLADIATORS!
Profiles of 2015 US OPEN participants:
The U.S. OPEN was created in 2001 by NASSC to attract top USA and international teams as the sport expanded globally. The first USA event of its kind to offer a significant cash purse, competition began as the “U.S. National Finals”. The venue was soon retitled the “U.S. OPEN” and participants representing over 20 countries have made their way to Virginia Beach to compete for a $25,000 purse. Sixteen teams will compete in 2015, the largest number thus far. Matches will be played in the Beach Stadium located at 24th Street, and an adjacent field. Competition should be intense leading up to the OPEN Bronze Medal match Sunday at noon and the Final at 1:30 PM. Don’t miss some of the top beach soccer players on the Planet but come early to get a seat! It’s all free and open to the public!

We’ll provide an advance brief overview of our sand warriors, beginning with last year’s champions – TEAM Canada which downed Portugal’s CD Nacional 3-2.
TEAM CANADA – One of the most high-mileage entries in the OPEN hail from the Toronto area and have competed in Virginia Beach for many years, becoming increasingly competitive with each outing. The team earned runner up honors in 2012 and recently were a finalist in Tobago’s beach tourney last November. With a multinational cadre of seasoned beach soccer athletes, TEAM CANADA’s focus is on repeating as US OPEN champions this year!

FC BARCELONA - One of the top professional beach soccer clubs worldwide. “FCB” is the first European-based team to compete in the U.S. OPEN, thanks to a new affiliation between NASSC and Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW), FIFA’s beach soccer operations, based in Barcelona. Leading FCB as player/coach is Ramiro Amarelle, a true icon in beach soccer who was credited with one of the best goals in the history of the sport. FCB is the parent club for outdoors stars including Lionel Messi, Neymar, Jr., and Luis Suarez.

PORT ANGELES BSC – Based in Los Angeles, the team has competed twice in the OPEN in previous years. They routinely participate in West Coast beach soccer tournaments and placed well in Oceanside, while taking the championships in both Huntington Beach and Santa Cruz. Armed with National Team players from Costa Rica and China, the squad will be further strengthened by guest players from Portland Oregon’s BSC, playing under the “Port Angeles banner”. With significant beach soccer history, the squad is expected to be very competitive in the U.S. OPEN.

HRSC ELITE - The Hampton Roads “Elite”, was formed in the late 1990’s, initially as the “HRSC All Stars”. Representing the Hampton Roads Soccer Council (HRSC), which created and produces NASSC and the OPEN, the team consists of former college stars, including All-Americans, MLS veterans and several former members on the USA National Beach Soccer Team. The Elite has captured the U.S. OPEN championship on a record three occasions. For a majority of Elite players, their beach soccer experience began when NASSC began in 1994.

ALLIANCE - The Alliance have been a regular competitor in the US OPEN for the past 12 years. The squad began as a group of undergraduate soccer players at James Madison University and have transitioned into a group of highly skilled college veterans and semi-pro athletes hailing from Virginia, the District of Columbia and beyond. The Alliance are among the best advocates of NASSC and beach soccer in general.

META BSC - Meta, Colombia is making its first appearance in the US OPEN. Founded in 2009 in Villavicencio, Meta has since won nine national beach soccer championships and recently took third place honors in Tobago’s beach soccer tournament. The squad travelling to Virginia Beach will include four Colombian National Team players, along with the National Team coach. We welcome them to the OPEN and appreciate their considerable efforts in making the journey from South American to Virginia. Meta promises to be extremely competitive!

MIAMI UNITED – Miami United is one of the “Legends” of both NASSC and the US OPEN, having been associated with the festival since the mid-1990s, when the team first arrived from South Florida as the “Flamilia”. In truth, NASSC’s successes over the decades can be traced in part to Flamilia, subsequently retitled “Team Rio”, who brought a first awareness of how the game of beach soccer is really meant to be played. With their overt love of the game and friendliness, the primarily Brazilian-born squad, long remembered for their colorful conga-drum parades on the VA Beach Boardwalk and incredible aerial skills, have continued their successes over the years, winning two US OPEN championships as “Florida Beach Soccer”, the BagoSports Festival in Trinidad and Tobago, and the MBS-Clearwater, Florida tournament.

MOUNTAINEERS – 2014 was the first year in which the University of West Virginia fielded a beach soccer team in the US OPEN. Composed primarily of D-1 collegiate players competing in the Big East Conference, the Mountaineers fared well in their initial outing, surprising the 2013 OPEN champs 3-2 in the preliminary rounds. With many veterans having national team experience in the USA, and abroad, plus some with MLS credentials, the Mountaineers are expected to be a significant force to be reckoned with in 2015.

WINNERS FC STARS – Winners FC was established in 2012 with an experienced group of US and international beach soccer athletes. As 4-time champions of “Liga Hispania de Virginia” and winners of the Buckroe Beach, Virginia sand soccer tournament, the team’s youth camps directly promote the “Winners Football Club”, based in Portsmouth, Va. The 2015 OPEN will be the first year of NASSC action for the club.
