The North American Sand Soccer Championships are honored to present USA National Soccer icon Eddie Pope as its 2008 Festival Celebrity. Born in Greensboro and hailing from High Point, North Carolina, Eddie "walked on" at the University of North Carolina and subsequently started every game for the Tar Heels. A law student, he was selected as All-American, All-ACC and All-South Region during his outstanding collegiate career, and also place-kicked for the University's football team. Pope was chosen by DC United in the first round on the 1996 MLS draft and, over the next decade, became a legend as central defender with DC United, the New York/New Jersey Metro Stars, and Real Salt Lake. He scored nine goals and notched ten assists, appearing in 255 matches during his MLS career. Eddie is the recipient of many awards, such as MLS Humanitarian of the Year, MLS Fair Play Award and a place on MLS's "Best XI". He was named to an amazing 11 MLS All-Star teams. Internationally, Eddie earned 82 ôcapsö and scored eight goals as a defender in U.S. National Team action during FIFA World Cups in 1998, 2002 and 2006. He also appeared in a total of 31 CONCACAF Qualifier matches leading up to World Cups. Eddie retired from competition in 2006 and is serving as Director of Player Relations for the MLS Players Union. Supporting many charitable endeavors, he created the Eddie Pope Foundation to help under-privileged children achieve academic success.
